Fort Worth ISD Takes Bold Steps Toward Turnaround.

On January 21, the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) signaled a potential turning point with unanimous board approval of a comprehensive strategic plan, prioritizing academic improvement and literacy.

The strategic plan, a response to community and civic leader concerns, aims to set ambitious goals despite the district’s steep challenges. Literacy remains the cornerstone, with a commitment to grade-level proficiency across FWISD’s 75,000 students. However, achieving meaningful progress will demand focus, resources, and a concerted community effort.

One critical highlight is the plan’s focus on improving outcomes for Black students. Although they represent 21% of the district’s population, they consistently lag in performance metrics. This focus seeks to address longstanding disparities stemming from resource mismanagement and systemic neglect.

Fort Worth’s future hinges on this renewed commitment. To avoid repeating past missteps, stakeholders must unite behind the strategic plan’s goals, prioritizing accountability and steady progress for the district’s students.
