Final Chapter for a Historic Bobcat Baseball Senior Class.

The Benbrook Bobcats walked back onto the field Friday night with their season hanging in the balance and a chance to force one more game against Brock in the Area Playoffs.

After a heartbreaking 2-1 extra-innings loss in Game 1, the Bobcats hoped to answer back behind pitcher Dan Stiefvater and extend the season for a senior class that helped build one of the program’s most successful runs.

But Brock came out swinging early.

The Eagles quickly grabbed momentum in the opening inning, capitalizing on walks, stolen bases, and timely hits to take a 3-0 lead.

Stiefvater battled throughout the night and flashed moments of his trademark bulldog mentality on the mound, but the Eagles kept pressure on the bases from the start.

Meanwhile, Brock ace Evan Connor was dominant.

The Arizona State commit allowed just two hits across seven shutout innings while striking out 15 Bobcats. Every inning seemed to bring another momentum-killing strikeout just as the Bobcats looked ready to settle in offensively.

Still, the Bobcats never stopped fighting.

Brock added runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build a 5-0 lead, but the Bobcats kept grinding through the final outs. Trentin Hornbeck came on in relief and helped keep the Eagles scoreless in the seventh, giving the Bobcats one last chance to create some late-game magic.

Then came the final moment. With two outs and the crowd leaning into every pitch, Austin Cross stepped to the plate, representing one last spark of hope for the Bobcats.

Cross had delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly in Game 1, and for a brief moment Friday night, it felt like another rally might be coming.

But on a full count, the Eagles recorded the final strikeout to complete the series sweep and claim the 2026 Area Championship.

Evan Smith and Chevy Martinez recorded Benbrook’s two hits on the night. Stiefvater pitched five innings with six strikeouts before Hornbeck closed things out in relief.

When the game finally ended, many players, parents, coaches, and fans stayed long after the scoreboard dimmed.

For the program’s 10 seniors, the reality settled in quietly. A group that won 102 games together had played its final game in a Bobcat uniform. No more practices. No more bus rides. No more playoff pushes together.

Even so, this season leaves behind far more than one final score.

The Bobcats finished 23-12-1, captured their seventh straight undefeated district championship, and added another Bi-District title to an already remarkable era of Benbrook baseball.

For Bobcat Nation, this team will be remembered for its toughness, consistency, and heart. And for the seniors who helped shape this run, the jersey may come off, but the bond forever remains. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.
