Biggins Boots Bobcats to District-Opening Win.

After two weeks away from the field, Benbrook had some rust to shake off Friday night. By the end, the Bobcats delivered a finish worth the wait.

With the Benbrook crowd filling the stands for Neon Night, the Bobcats opened district play against Southwest in a game that stayed tight from beginning to end.

Benbrook struck first when quarterback Lucas Davis, who went 16 of 29 on the night and threw 2 TDs and one interception, connected with Quentin Thomas on a screen pass, and Thomas turned it into a 41-yard touchdown. Corbin Biggins added the extra point, sending the Bobcats into halftime with a 7-0 lead.

Southwest answered in the third quarter with the kind of play that can flip a game. A Raiders defensive lineman tipped and intercepted a Benbrook screen pass, then returned it 67 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7.

The Raiders carried that momentum into the fourth, taking a 14-7 lead on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 8:32 remaining.

Benbrook needed something to turn its way, and it finally did. After the Bobcats turned the ball over on downs, Southwest fumbled it back with 4:51 left. Benbrook quickly cashed in, with Davis finding Dorien Johnson for a 31-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14.

Then came a wild final few minutes.

Jayden Deane jumped a Southwest route and tipped the pass into the air, where teammate Nicholas Courtney, who also recovered a fumble on the night, secured the interception and returned it to the 1-yard line.

While Benbrook looked ready to punch it in, two negative plays and a 15-yard penalty pushed the Bobcats back to the 20. That left the game on the foot of Biggins.

Facing fourth down with 1:25 remaining, Jaxyn Donart handled the hold, and Biggins drilled a 37-yard field goal to put Benbrook ahead 17-14.

Southwest, which had only 159 total yards on the night, still had time for one last drive, but sophomore Ayden Bruck intercepted the Raiders on their second play, allowing Benbrook to take a knee and celebrate its first district victory, closing out the night with 312 total yards.

The 17-14 win moves the Bobcats to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district play.

Next comes a short week. Benbrook faces Eastern Hills on Thursday, October 1, at Clark Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the Bobcats on the visitor side.
