Tarrant County Commissioner Roderick Miles Jr. and former Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks are leading efforts to raise awareness about prostate cancer, a leading cause of death in men, with the 11th annual Prostate Cancer Education and Screening Event.
Set for February 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UT Southwestern Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth, the event offers free prostate cancer screenings, educational resources from an oncologist, and a free meal. The event aims to educate men, particularly those who often avoid doctor visits, in a welcoming and supportive environment.
As part of the Healthy Lives Matter initiative, the event highlights the importance of early detection, especially for men at high risk—those over 45, with a family history of prostate cancer, and men of color, who face higher rates of diagnosis and mortality. Black men, in particular, are nearly 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer than other demographics.
