As students head into summer break, Fort Worth ISD is encouraging families to think beyond sunscreen and swimming pools and have an important conversation about firearm safety at home.
In a letter sent to parents and guardians this month, Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata reminded families that safely storing firearms can help prevent accidents and save lives.
The district shared that Texas law now requires schools to provide parents and guardians with information on safe firearm storage. According to the letter, firearms should be stored unloaded in a locked safe or container, with ammunition kept separately.
FWISD also reminded families that Texas law makes it illegal to leave unsecured firearms accessible to children. Depending on the circumstances, violations can lead to criminal charges ranging from fines to jail time.
District leaders encouraged parents to use the summer months as an opportunity to talk openly with children and others about gun safety, especially as kids spend more time visiting friends, relatives, and neighbors during school break.
Additional firearm safety resources are available through the Texas Department of Public Safety Safe Gun Storage Initiative and Cook Children’s Aim for Safety program.
For many families, summer is a season filled with freedom, travel, and time together. District officials hope simple safety conversations now can help keep it that way for everyone.
