With winter weather finally clearing, Benbrook Bobcats athletics have been busy making up lost time. One of the first games back carried extra weight, a familiar rivalry matchup against the Western Hills Cougars.
Just before Christmas, Benbrook handled the Cougars 59-39 at Billingsley Field House. This time, the setting shifted to Wilkerson Greines, but the outcome followed a similar script.
The Bobcats controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a 9-0 run behind Brennan Barton, who scored nine quick points on his way to a game-high 20. With steady contributions from Maddox Thompson, Dorien Johnson, Jayden Hall, Will Cook, and several JV players, Benbrook closed the first quarter up 20-2.

Shooting from deep was not sharp, but the Bobcats made up for it by attacking the paint and converting at the free-throw line, finishing 10-16 as a team. Some second-quarter turnovers gave Western Hills a brief spark, but Benbrook stayed composed and took a 28-13 lead into halftime.
The third quarter removed any doubt. Seniors Barton, Hall, Cael Denson, and Deshawn Deane led a decisive surge, outscoring the Cougars 22 to stretch the lead to 50-24. From there, Coach Mendez leaned on JV players to close out a 62-37 win while keeping starters fresh for another district game Friday night.
Barton led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Hall with 10, Denson with six, and Deane with five, with the bench filling in the rest. The win moves Benbrook to 17-11 overall, 5-2 in district play, and third in the district standings.
There is little time to slow down. The Bobcats are back on the court tonight for more district play, hosting Eastern Hills Highlanders at Benbrook Middle High School. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm as district play continues to heat up.
