Holiday Gifts Doctors Say Send Kids to the ER After Christmas.

The holidays are already expensive. An emergency room visit makes them even more so.

Medical professionals are urging families to think twice about sure popular gifts that consistently lead to injuries and hospital visits after Christmas morning.

Here are five items that doctors say cause the most preventable emergencies, especially when gifts do not match a child’s age or developmental stage.

5. Water beads may look harmless, but they can be dangerous if swallowed by children or pets. Once ingested, they expand and can block the intestines. Even more concerning, they are often invisible on X-rays, making diagnosis difficult.

4. Small magnets are another serious risk. If more than one is swallowed, they can pull together through tissue, leading to internal bleeding or infection. Magnets are also frequently placed in the nose, where they can damage delicate tissue.

3. Button batteries are especially dangerous. When swallowed, they can burn through internal tissue quickly, sometimes reaching the airways or major blood vessels. These injuries can become life-threatening quickly.

2. Trampolines send a steady stream of patients to the ER each year. Injuries range from broken arms and legs to serious head, neck, and back trauma. Adults, children, and even pets are commonly injured.

1. Electric bikes and scooters top the list. Doctors report severe injuries from crashes involving cars, fixed objects, and loss of control. Even with helmets and safety gear, riders can suffer head, spine, and internal injuries. In the most serious cases, these accidents have been fatal.

Doctors say the best prevention is to choose age-appropriate gifts and skip high-risk items altogether. A safer toy today can mean fewer tears and no hospital visits tomorrow.
