How You Can Help Prevent Grass Fires.

When Texas heat meets dry grass, danger follows. This summer, Benbrook residents are being urged to stay alert and take simple steps to help prevent grass fires before they start.

It begins with outdoor burning. Just don’t. City ordinance prohibits it, and for good reason. One small spark can lead to a fast-moving fire. If you’re using lawn equipment like mowers or chainsaws, try to do it early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. And always keep a hose or water nearby, just in case.

Cigarette butts may seem small, but they can start big problems. Never toss them out of car windows or onto the ground. Use an ashtray or fire-safe container.

You can also achieve a lot by simply keeping your yard in check. Mow down tall grass, clear out dry brush and leaves, and leave space around your home that’s free of flammable debris.

Avoid parking on dry grass, as the heat from your vehicle can easily ignite what’s underneath. And if you see smoke or fire, call 911 right away. Quick response saves lives and property.
