Last Saturday afternoon in Benbrook was a wake-up call. A pair of grass fires reminded everyone that while the scenery might still look green, it doesn’t take much for things to go up in smoke.
The first fire kicked off in a freshly mowed pasture after a pickup truck unexpectedly caught fire. Thanks to the quick response by Benbrook firefighters, with help from Cresson, the flames were contained and prevented from spreading.
But barely an hour later, a hot, broken piece of a brake shoe flew off a vehicle along US 377. It landed in the grass and sparked not one but three separate fires. Even though the grass still looked healthy, smoke filled the air, and fire crews had to hustle again.
These back-to-back incidents are a strong indication that the dry season is approaching. Even green grass isn’t as safe as it looks, especially near roads and fields.
This is a heads-up for all of us in Benbrook: keep an eye on fire risks, stay alert, and take care of our community.
