Tuesday night at Benbrook Middle-High School brought the kind of small-town energy that makes local schools feel like the heart of a community.
While families filled the auditorium for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade winter band concerts, the sound of Christmas classics drifted through the halls. Minutes after the final bow, the focus shifted down the corridor as the Benbrook Bobcats took the court to meet the Cleburne Yellowjackets.
Benbrook entered the game 5-4 on the season after a solid showing at the Brock Classic and hoped to stretch their winning streak to two.
The first quarter started slowly, then heated up quickly as some early talking among players prompted warnings from officials. On the court, senior forward Jayden Bradshaw powered the Bobcats through the opening stretch, scoring seven of the teamโs twelve points to keep the game tight. Cleburne led 15 to 12 after one.

The second quarter brought Benbrookโs best rhythm of the night. Turnovers dropped sharply, the defense tightened, and scoring came from Bradshaw, Jayden Hall, Brennan Barton, and Cael Denson. The Bobcats claimed a 20 to 19 lead at the half.
Halftime adjustments have usually worked well for this team, but the third quarter told a different story. Benbrook cooled off from beyond the arc, stumbled into seven turnovers, and struggled to find a scoring groove.
Bradshaw managed only two free throws, but Barton, Denson, and Deshawn Deane pitched in to cover the deficit, and Hall delivered two key plays to keep Benbrook ahead 32 to 30 heading into the fourth.
The final quarter was both promising and puzzling. Maddux Thompson finally found his touch with a corner three-pointer and two free throws. Bradshaw and Barton added nine more, and turnovers stayed low.
But on the defensive end, Benbrook ran out of steam. Cleburne took control, scoring freely and managing the clock to close out a 52 to 46 win.

Bradshaw led the Bobcats with 17 points, four blocks, and a strong inside presence. Barton followed with 10 points, five assists, and steady all-around play.
A look back at the numbers tells the story. Sixteen turnovers, missed chances at the line (9-14 FTs), cold shooting from the starters, and a tranquil night from the bench kept the game from tipping Benbrookโs way. Even a handful of extra free throws or the normal 6-8 bench points could have changed the outcome.
The Bobcats now sit at 5-5 on the season and turn their attention to tournament play, where they will face the 5-4 Alvarado Indians on Thursday, December 11. Alvarado arrives fresh off an overtime win against Fort Worthโs Young Menโs Leadership Academy.
Benbrook fans can expect another competitive matchup as the Bobcats look to regain their footing to move beyond .500 on the season.
