Tarrant County Takes Targeted Approach to Homestead Exemption Audits.

Last week, we reported on a recent update to Texas law requiring counties to audit homestead exemptions every five years, but Tarrant County is handling this differently.

Instead of requiring all homeowners to reapply, the county is contacting only those whose exemption status appears questionable.

If you receive a letter requesting proof of your homestead exemption, don’t ignore it. Failing to respond could result in losing your exemption and facing higher property taxes.

Spurred by this lesser-known state law, this change has sparked questions from many Tarrant County property owners. To clarify, homeowners can check their homestead exemption status by visiting their county appraisal district’s website.

For a directory of all county appraisal district websites, visit the Texas Comptroller’s page at comptroller.texas.gov. A quick property search will confirm your exemption details.

Stay proactive to ensure you’re maximizing your property tax benefits!
