The Fort Worth Zoo has successfully hatched two more critically endangered gharial crocodiles, marking the third consecutive year it has done so, making it the only zoo in North America to breed them with such consistency.
With fewer than 1,000 adult gharials left in the wild, this is a big win for conservation. The zoo’s team has spent years fine-tuning conditions to support breeding, and although the hatchlings aren’t yet on public display, a new viewing area is in the works.
Eventually, these young crocs may help other zoos or even support future reintroduction efforts in the wild.
