Western Hills wrapped up its three-match homestand Tuesday night with a gritty showing against district leader Eastern Hills.
The JV squad saw its eight-match winning streak and perfect district record come to an end in a tight 1-0 loss. A late first-half handball led to a penalty kick that proved the difference. Emergency keeper Kelvin Zapata stepped in and competed hard in a pressure moment, but the Highlanders held on.
Varsity faced a similar uphill climb. After conceding on a deflection, the Cougars responded with pace and purpose. Cesar Hinojos found the equalizer before halftime to even the match at 1 to 1. In the second half, Western Hills was forced to play a man down after a penalty, and Eastern Hills capitalized late to secure a 2-1 win.
JV now stands at 11-5 overall, 7-1 in district. Varsity sits at 7-10 overall, 3-6 in district.
Next up is a short trip down 377 on Friday to face Benbrook Middle High School. JV kicks off at 6:30 pm, with varsity to follow at 8 pm.
For Benbrook soccer fans, it is another chance to fill the stands and support local athletes who continue to compete with heart, even when the scoreboard does not fall their way.
