BENBROOK, TX—A disturbing phone scam is targeting residents of Benbrook, and residents should be on high alert.
A local resident recently received a call from someone claiming to be with Chase Bank’s security department. The caller alleged that a credit application had been submitted in their name from Florida.
What made this call particularly alarming? The scammer already had the resident’s full name, address, date of birth, and even Social Security number—all correct. The caller insisted they were from Chase and even had a convincing phone recording when called back, making the scam seem legitimate.
Thankfully, the resident didn’t fall for it. Instead, they contacted Chase directly using the official 1-800 customer service number, where they were told no such credit application existed. The representative confirmed this was a phishing attempt, with scammers verifying stolen information to commit fraud later.
So how do scammers get this personal data? A quick search revealed that for as little as $50, Social Security numbers can be purchased online, including on the dark web.
Benbrook residents, stay vigilant. Never provide personal details over the phone, and if you receive a similar call, hang up and contact your bank directly. Spread the word to keep our community safe from identity theft.
