FWISD Teacher Resignations Raise Questions Over Changing Job Demands.

A group of Fort Worth ISD teachers could face professional consequences for leaving the district after their resignation deadline. But one local education advocate says the story may be more complicated than teachers simply walking away from their contracts.

The FWISD Board of Managers is scheduled to consider an item Tuesday that would authorize the district to report certain certified employees to the Texas Education Agency for contract abandonment.

According to the district agenda language cited by Mindia Whittier of A Bold Piece, the employees resigned after the statutory deadline without prior written approval and, in the district’s determination, without good cause.

Whittier argues that the Board should examine what changed between when those teachers signed their contracts and when they resigned.

Teachers have described longer required hours, heavier workloads, more scripted instruction and concerns about curriculum and the time available to meet special education accommodations, according to Whittier.

Her central question is whether each resignation was considered individually before being classified as lacking good cause, particularly if teachers cited significant changes to their working conditions.

“Teachers signed contracts. They should honor them,” Whittier writes. “Yes, AND…that principle cannot reasonably operate in only one direction.”

The issue matters because a referral could put an educator’s certification before the State Board for Educator Certification for possible sanctions. Whittier contends the Board should understand why each teacher left and what circumstances the district considered before approving referrals as a group.

For Benbrook families, the larger question reaches beyond employment contracts. Teacher turnover, working conditions and classroom expectations ultimately affect the educators serving students each day.
