A Benbrook homeowner’s experience with a failed backflow valve has prompted a lively discussion among residents about repair costs, city requirements, and ways to avoid paying more than necessary.
The homeowner shared that after receiving a notice from the City of Benbrook stating the home’s backflow prevention device had failed inspection, a plumber advised that the entire assembly had to be replaced at a cost of $2,700.
The family said they had repaired the same valve about 10 years ago with replacement parts costing around $75, making the new estimate especially surprising.
Of course, this quickly drew responses from other homeowners, many of whom said they had faced similar inspections because of their irrigation systems.
Several residents reported paying significantly less for replacements, with costs ranging from a few hundred dollars to around $1,500, while others said a rebuild kit solved the problem without replacing the entire assembly.
Residents also recommended getting additional estimates before authorizing a replacement, using local companies and contractors such as Next Level Plumbing, Benbrook Backflow and Sprinkler, and Max Flow Plumbing.
Others noted that Benbrook requires specific types of backflow prevention devices to help protect the municipal water supply, while several encouraged homeowners to verify whether a repair, rebuild, or replacement is actually required before proceeding.
The discussion serves as a reminder to homeowners to ask questions, compare estimates, understand current city requirements, and seek a second opinion when facing a major plumbing repair.
