Some stories feel bigger than sports, and this is one of them.
Reagan Smith, a graduate of Western Hills High School, is back on the mound after an 18-month stretch that tested his body and resolve. Following heart surgery a few years ago, Smith faced another major hurdle with Tommy John surgery and added complications that made the road back longer and harder than expected.
This week, that perseverance meets a milestone. Smith is scheduled to start on Opening Day for Nelson College, a moment that reflects far more than a box score.
The season opens Thursday with a doubleheader in Waxahachie, with first pitch set for 11:30 AM, followed by game two at 1:30 PM. For Smith, it marks a full-circle moment from recovery to responsibility, earning the ball when it matters most.
For Western Hills alumni and Benbrook residents, it is another reminder that Cougar pride does not end at graduation. It carries forward through perseverance, faith, and the quiet work of showing up again when it would have been easier not to.
Read Smith’s full journey, in his own words. Opening Day is always special. This one carries a little more meaning.
