New Texas Laws Take Effect September 1.

Big changes are taking effect in Texas starting today, September 1, as several new laws come into force.

Among them is Senate Bill 4, which raises the homestead exemption for ISD property taxes from $100,000 to $140,000, potentially saving homeowners about $363 a year.

House Bill 229 directs state agencies to define gender identity strictly in terms of reproductive organs, requiring individuals to identify as male or female.

Meanwhile, Senate Bill 261 bans the sale of lab-grown meat in restaurants and stores, while Senate Bill 314 prohibits the use of certain additives in school lunches.

Schools will also implement new rules, including a ban on cell phones during class and requirements for displaying the Ten Commandments.

These are just a few of the laws reshaping Texas policy this week. For the full breakdown of what’s changing, visit WFAA’s full story.
