When Safety Calls the Shots for Local Families.

As the winter storm fades, school districts across North Texas are taking different paths forward. Some are reopening campuses. Others are choosing to wait, citing lingering safety concerns. That contrast has caught the attention of many Benbrook families.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, road conditions remain hazardous in parts of the region.

In response, Dallas ISD and several neighboring districts, including Aledo, Keller, Northwest, Weatherford, and Azle, decided to stay closed another day. Their reasoning was straightforward: crews are still clearing walkways and parking lots, and many neighborhood streets remain difficult for buses to navigate.

Fort Worth ISD, however, moved ahead with reopening, even as parents had lingering questions about transportation delays, building conditions, and classroom heating reliability. Those concerns are not new to many families, and feel more pressing while weather impacts are still being assessed.

For parents, the decision often comes down to one simple question: Is it safe today?

Some have chosen to keep their children home, not as a protest, but as a precaution. FWISD allows absences to be excused through its standard form, giving families a way to prioritize safety while districts sort through remaining storm-related issues.

Parents who choose that route can submit the districtโ€™s excuse form and select the appropriate option, noting safety concerns tied to weather, transportation, or facilities.

As schools reopen and routines resume, this moment highlights a familiar tension for families across Benbrook. When systems move forward at different speeds, parents are often left to make the final call. For many, erring on the side of caution simply feels like the responsible choice.
