When a Shell Isn’t Just a Shell.

What looked like a beautiful beach souvenir nearly turned into a brush with death for one woman vacationing in Okinawa.

Beckylee Rawls picked up a vibrant shell, unaware it was home to one of the world’s deadliest sea creatures—the cone snail.

Often called the “cigarette snail” because its venom can be fatal within minutes, this tiny predator hides behind its dazzling shell. There is no known antivenom, and even handling one can be hazardous.

Thankfully, Rawls walked away unscathed. Her story is now a reminder to beachgoers everywhere, including here in Benbrook: when in doubt, leave it alone. That souvenir isn’t worth the sting.
