If you have ever driven past Benbrook Lake and wondered how people keep ending up on top of that steep levee, you are not alone.
Many locals have watched walkers appear at the top and assumed it required scrambling up rocks or a serious climb.
Good news. There is a much easier and fully accessible way up.
The most straightforward route starts on the Lakeside side. Turn onto Longhorn Park Drive and continue up the hill past Pecan Valley Golf Course.
Near the top, you will find a small park and parking lot on the right side of the road. From there, follow the clearly worn path to the levee entrance. It is legal, well used, and far less intimidating than climbing straight up the rocks.
If your goal is to walk across the dam itself, head to the east end parking lot near the dam. Entry is on that side, and the walk across the levee is about three-quarters of a mile with wide open views of the lake and surrounding hills.
For those looking for a longer outing, the Longhorn Park route offers a scenic out-and-back walk of roughly 2.5 miles, making it a popular option for walkers, runners, and anyone seeking a quiet stretch outdoors.
So next time you see people walking high above the lake, now you know. No climbing required, just good views and an easy path waiting at the top.
