Summer heat means more than just sunscreen and bug spray.
In parts of Texas, it’s also black bear season. Cubs start wandering, and adults are out and about looking for mates, which can lead to unexpected sightings.
While Benbrook isn’t prime bear territory, residents who travel or own property in west, southwest, northeast, or far northwest Texas should stay alert. A few simple habits can help keep bears and people safe: never feed or approach a bear, store trash and pet food indoors, and bring in bird feeders when bears are active.
If you spot a bear, don’t panic. Please notify your neighbors and report the incident to your local Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist. The goal isn’t fear, just awareness. Bears tend to mind their own business unless lured in by food or easy access.
Stay informed and BearWise this summer. It keeps everyone safer, fur and all.
