Residents across Benbrook, who were wondering about the helicopter activity circling on Friday afternoon, now have a clearer picture of what was happening near Lake Benbrook.
According to a Parent Alert message sent by Southwest Christian School at approximately 3:34 p.m., Lakeside Drive was closed because of a fire at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office near the school’s Lakeside campus.
The alert instructed families to approach the campus from the east side rather than the west and warned drivers to adjust routes accordingly.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing smoke and a large emergency response near the Corps of Engineers property, located near the hill above the lake, close to Southwest Christian. Police also blocked portions of the roadway near Winscott Road heading toward Pecan Valley.
The heavy air activity, including helicopters overhead during Friday rush hour, quickly drew attention and questions from nearby neighborhoods.
Authorities say an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. No additional information about injuries or property damage had been released as of Friday evening.
This remains a developing story, and additional updates are expected as more information becomes publicly available.
