For generations of kids in Benbrook, Castle Park, and Robot Park were more than playgrounds. They were pirate ships, fortresses, hiding spots, and the backdrop to countless childhood memories.
Now, after decades of scraped knees, tag games, birthday parties, and summer afternoons, the longtime playgrounds are preparing for one final goodbye before a new chapter begins.
Construction on the replacement playgrounds at Dutch Branch Park is scheduled to begin Monday, June 1, with both Castle Park and Robot Park temporarily closing during the project.
Residents are being encouraged to stop by this week, especially over the weekend, for one last round of play and a few final photos before demolition and construction begin.
While the original playgrounds are going away, city leaders say modern replacements are on the way as part of ongoing park improvements. Dutch Branch Park itself, along with nearby pavilions, will remain open during construction.
For many Benbrook families, the parks hold memories stretching across multiple generations, making this transition feel less like a playground update and more like the end of a hometown era.
