BENBROOK, TX – The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed a measles outbreak in the South Plains region, with 124 cases reported since late January.
Of those affected, 18 have been hospitalized, and the majority are either unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status. Only five confirmed cases had received the measles vaccine.
Given the highly contagious nature of measles, more cases are expected in the outbreak area and surrounding communities. Health officials urge residents to get vaccinated, as the MMR vaccine (measles-mumps-rubella) is the most effective defense against infection.
