Fort Worth ISD Overhauls Instruction to Boost Literacy and Math.

Fort Worth ISD is making a bold move to transform student learning.

Superintendent Karen Molinar unveiled a sweeping $22.7 million instructional overhaul, shifting resources to reading and math while eliminating 19 job titles affecting more than 160 employees. The district’s board unanimously approved the plan, marking a shift from administrative-heavy support to hands-on teaching.

The redesign introduces “demonstration teachers” who will model instruction while actively teaching core subjects. These positions replace instructional coaches and deans, aligning with the district’s push for measurable student outcomes. Schools will also add 34 acceleration teachers for targeted tutoring, with performance-based stipends of up to $10,000.

Key structural changes include reducing management layers and moving dyslexia services from special education into instructional leadership to ensure earlier intervention. Middle schools will transition to block scheduling, doubling literacy and math instruction time.

Molinar emphasized urgency, citing low proficiency rates—only 35% of students read on grade level, and just 19% meet Algebra I standards. She expects immediate implementation by the first day of school, with early results anticipated based on recent tutoring success.
