Presidents’ Day turned into a full day of baseball for Western Hills as both JV and varsity squads traveled to Dallas to face off at the Texas Rangers Youth Academy. It was a long road trip, but the Cougars made it count.
The JV team came up just short in an 11-9 loss, yet it was anything but quiet. Western Hills battled to the final inning and had the tying run standing on second base before the rally ended. Gabriel Zuniga led the way at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two singles and two RBI in a steady performance that kept the Cougars within reach.
Varsity left no doubt.
The Cougars rolled to a 17-5 win behind dominant pitching and timely hitting. Axel Sanchez set the tone early, throwing five no-hit innings and striking out 10. It was the kind of outing that settles a team and shifts momentum fast. Tyler Johnston handled closing duties and backed it up with his bat, finishing 2 for 3 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Two games. One narrow loss, one decisive win. Not a bad start to the season. More importantly, a glimpse of the depth and resilience building inside the Western Hills program as district play approaches. Visit to get more details on Western Hills Baseball games, times, and locations.
