Benbrook Middle-High School Begins Veterans Certification Process.

A local veteran’s push for change appears to have produced results.

Steve Stiefvater announced this week that Benbrook Middle-High School has submitted an application to become certified through the Texas Veterans Commission and is expected to receive certification by Aug. 1, 2026.

The update follows concerns Stiefvater previously raised regarding the school’s participation in a certification process that can help eligible military families access Chapter 35 Dependents’ Educational Assistance benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Stiefvater, a disabled veteran, had publicly called on school and district leaders to pursue certification, arguing that it could help qualifying students receive education benefits available under federal law. He also shared that he has been referred to a local attorney and noted that similar cases involving veterans and school districts have been pursued elsewhere in the country.

If certification is approved as expected, eligible students attending Benbrook Middle-High School could have access to a pathway for receiving these benefits while completing their high school education.

The development marks a significant step forward in an issue that has drawn attention from veterans, military families, and community members across Benbrook in recent months.
