Benbrook City Council Election Draws New Challengers.

Benbrook’s November election is still a few months away, but the races for City Council are beginning to get interesting.

Longtime Benbrook resident Whitney Hughes announced Monday that she has filed to challenge incumbent Laura Mackey for Place 6, giving voters a contested race for the seat.

Hughes shared the news on social media after submitting her application at Benbrook City Hall.

“I was born here, I love this town, and I hope to have an opportunity to contribute to its growth and success,” Hughes wrote, adding that she was filled with “nerves and excitement.”

Her announcement quickly drew encouragement from current and former Benbrook residents, including comments praising her willingness to step forward and get involved.

Place 6 is not the only contested race taking shape. Greg Clem, a longtime Benbrook resident and leader of the Stop South Benbrook Floods community group, is running for Place 4 against incumbent Dustin Phillips.

As of Monday, Aug. 17, the current field includes Renee Franklin, the Place 2 incumbent; Phillips and Clem for Place 4; and Mackey and Hughes for Place 6.

Benbrook’s general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, with Places 2, 4 and 6 on the ballot. Municipal elections are typically conducted jointly with Tarrant County.

With Hughes now entering the Place 6 race and Clem challenging for Place 4, Benbrook voters will have choices to make as election season moves closer to November.

Residents can find deadlines, voting information, and other details on the City of Benbrook Election Information page. Those interested in running for office can find paperwork and requirements on the city’s Candidate Filing Forms page.
