As Election Day approaches, Benbrook residents are digging deeper into how city leadership shapes the community’s growth.
One hot topic among voters is the role of the Benbrook Economic Development Corporation (BEDC)—the group responsible for attracting new businesses, supporting existing ones, and guiding the development of city-owned land.
City Council candidate Keith Tiner, who previously served on the BEDC board and now holds the Place 7 seat, says the organization’s work extends far beyond large retail names.
While BEDC has helped attract well-known spots like Ace Hardware, Jake’s Hamburgers, Taco and Avocado, and Hoffbrau Steakhouse, it also supports smaller, local ventures. Projects like the renovation of two North Benbrook business parks were designed to help small businesses thrive by improving infrastructure and creating modern, attractive spaces.
When asked about opportunities for local entrepreneurs, Tiner pointed residents to the BEDC’s small-business resources and the Benbrook Chamber of Commerce, which partners with the city to help startups find their footing.
Residents also raised questions about grocery options and long-standing rumors that the city once made an exclusivity agreement with Walmart. Tiner clarified that no such deal exists and said attracting a second grocery store remains a priority for the BEDC, though such developments depend on market demand and private investment.
Discussion on wages and job quality followed, with Tiner noting that while the city doesn’t control private pay rates, ongoing projects like the Chisholm 20 Industrial Park will create more professional opportunities. That site alone is expected to create up to 600 jobs, including corporate and manufacturing roles such as those at Tandy Leather’s headquarters.
While opinions varied—some praising Benbrook’s steady progress, others urging more high-wage employers—the conversation highlighted what residents value most: thoughtful growth that balances local charm with long-term opportunity.
