Owen Atkins had his eyes on 15:30. He got there, with a little time to spare.
The Benbrook Bobcat runner finished first in his recent 5K varsity race with a personal-best time of 15:29.91, setting another Benbrook school record.
What makes the run even more impressive is how quickly the record fell. Atkins had just set the school mark at 16:15.11 on Aug. 14, then lowered it by more than 45 seconds.
Atkins celebrated the milestone in a recent Instagram post, writing, “I give all the Glory to God!! I wouldn’t be able to do this without the gifts he’s given me!!!”
His post ended with a question about what should come next: sub-15 or 15:25?
The answer didn’t take long.
Sub-15 it is.
For Atkins, it’s #onemileatatime. But lately, those miles are getting faster.
