Long before today’s Benbrook took shape, there were family homes, dirt roads, an old post office and places that generations of residents once knew well.
Longtime Benbrook resident and real estate broker Gary Addison recently pointed neighbors toward a place where some of those memories are still waiting to be discovered.
The Benbrook Public Library’s “Memories of Old Benbrook” collection offers a look into the community’s past through photographs of early residents, homes, automobiles, water scenes, the post office and everyday life around town.
The City of Benbrook also maintains a historical gallery featuring James “Squire” Benbrook, the old Lake Benbrook Resort and Marina, historic floods and Dutch Branch Ranch, once home to Elliott and Ruth Roosevelt.
For longtime residents, the photographs may bring back a few memories. For newer neighbors, they offer a chance to see what was here before us.
As Addison puts it, “Pay the library a visit. You’ll be glad you did.”
