Child Care Wins Could Bring Relief to Hundreds of Tarrant County Families.

Big changes are coming to child care in Texas, and Benbrook families may start to feel the impact.

Lawmakers concluded the 2025 legislative session with several new bills that could help alleviate the burden for parents seeking to work while finding quality childcare for their children.

The biggest win? A $100 million boost for child care scholarships. It’s a one-time investment drawn from unused TANF funds, but it’s expected to create around 600 to 700 new spots for families in Tarrant County, where nearly 15,500 remain on the waitlist. It’s not a complete solution, but it’s a start.

Other bills on the move: Child care workers with children now receive priority access to scholarships, which could help alleviate classroom staff shortages. Another law cuts red tape for family-based care providers, allowing more to stay open and serve nontraditional schedules. A third bill lets local workforce boards raise provider reimbursements, which could unlock more child care seats in areas with the greatest need.

It’s a promising step forward for working parents and care providers across the region.
