As summer gets underway, Denton County health officials have confirmed two cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness and has been linked to a multistate outbreak under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to Denton County Public Health, the source of the local infections has not been identified, and officials say the impact remains limited. The parasite has been associated with contaminated fresh produce and can cause symptoms including watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and, less commonly, vomiting, headaches, body aches, and a low-grade fever.
Health officials will continue monitoring cases throughout the summer, when infections are typically more common.
