Texas lawmakers are pushing to cap superintendent salaries amid concerns over public education spending.
Proposed bills would limit pay to either twice the highest-paid teacher’s salary (HB 2562) or the governor’s salary of $153,750 (HB 974). Another measure (HB 610) seeks to cap severance pay at six months’ salary and benefits.
With over 500 superintendents earning more than the governor, including bonuses and perks, legislators face mounting pressure to act before the March 14 filing deadline. The Texas Legislature’s session runs until June 2, providing a narrow window for reform.
