Preparation includes knowing how to shut off gas and electricity, creating an emergency contact list, safeguarding important documents, and assembling a 72-hour emergency kit. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for emergency notifications through the city’s Know Now! alert system.
When flooding occurs, officials stress the importance of staying informed through weather reports and emergency alerts, avoiding floodwaters on foot or by vehicle, and following evacuation instructions if issued. Even shallow water can conceal debris, contamination, or dangerous currents.
The city also recommends long-term flood protection measures, including identifying flood-prone electrical circuits in the home and, where appropriate, considering protective features such as flood walls or berms.
