Progress showed up on the track last week for Western Hills High School.
On March 5, Cougar athletes traveled to the Lake Worth Bullfrog Relays and returned with something every coach hopes to see throughout a season. Improvement. Seven personal records were set during the meet as both the boys and girls teams continued to build momentum.
The biggest leap of the day came from AโQuasia Anderson in the 300-meter hurdles. She shaved nearly four seconds off her previous time, improving from 62.43 to 58.62 seconds and finishing in fourth place.
Several other athletes turned in strong performances across the meet.
For the JV girls, the 4×100 meter relay team of EriโOnna Titues, Alona Kennedy, Laila Guy, and AโQuasia Anderson finished sixth. Layla James set a new personal record in discus with a throw of 51 feet 5 inches, while SaโMya Walker recorded a personal best of 19 feet 3.5 inches in shot put.
On the JV boys’ side, Jaiden Tannis placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a personal record time of 2:25.72.
The varsity girls also saw progress in the long jump. Shamiya James finished sixth with a personal record of 14 feet 8.25 inches, and Makera Winfield added a personal best of 14 feet 5 inches.
For the varsity boys, Alex Richmond set a new personal record of 34 feet 10.25 inches in the triple jump, while Josh Oliver placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Track season often tells its story in small improvements that add up over time. For Western Hills, last weekโs meet offered a clear sign that the Cougars are moving forward one stride at a time.
