On August 30, 2025, the Benbrook Public Library was standing-room only as residents gathered for the Stop South Benbrook Floods meeting, led by local advocate Greg Clem.
The focus was clear: halting new home construction in a rezoned floodplain that many argue is already contributing to street flooding across South Benbrook.
The meeting drew both concerned citizens and community leaders, including Benbrook City Council candidates Ryan Reagan, Sean Moore, and Derrick Varnell, who are vying for Seats 3, 5, and 7. Each emphasized their desire to prioritize the well-being of residents over their own self-interest or financial interests tied to development.
Flooding in South Benbrook has persisted for more than four years (longer for some multigenerational residents), and residents say the cityโs waivers and approvals have only exacerbated the situation. Phase 3 of development is already underway, and fears are mounting that Phase 4 could compound the problem. Attendees voiced frustration, calling for accountability and reminding city officials that their votes reflect community trust.
For those unable to attend, Greg Clemโs presentation slides are available for review at this link.
The fight is far from over. Neighbors are continuing to rally by signing the Stop South Benbrook Floods petition, now live at benbrooklife.com/residents-petition-to-stop-south-benbrook-flooding-concerns.
This grassroots movement underscores a growing sentiment in Benbrook: protecting homes and neighborhoods must take precedence over unchecked development.
