Aledo’s FM 1187 Is Getting a Major Makeover.

If you’ve driven FM 1187 south of the railroad tracks lately, you’ve probably noticed the congestion. That two-lane stretch between Maverick Street and FM 5 just isn’t keeping up with Aledo’s growth — and now, plans are in motion to change that.

Last Thursday, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) invited residents to get a firsthand look at the proposed widening project during a public meeting held at Aledo Middle School. The cafeteria was buzzing with conversation as neighbors, city leaders, and TxDOT reps studied maps, asked questions, and voiced concerns.

So, what’s the plan? It’s a two-phase project. First, FM 1187 will be expanded from two lanes to four, featuring a landscaped median and dedicated turn lanes. Both sides of the road will also get a shared-use path, making it safer for walkers and cyclists. Later, if traffic demands it and funding becomes available, the median could be replaced with two additional lanes, bringing the total to six.

TxDOT aims to start construction in late 2027. However, several steps must be taken first, including environmental reviews, right-of-way acquisition (approximately 2.5 acres), utility relocation, and final design. The good news is that no homes or businesses are expected to be displaced, and local officials say they’re working closely with the school district to avoid chaos during school hours.

That includes a new crosswalk planned in front of the Aledo Early Childhood Academy and improvements at FM 5 and Barnwell Lane. The project also promises better safety for kids walking to and from school, a major priority for many families in the area.

While many people are on board with the project, not everyone is thrilled. Some are uneasy about the idea of a six-lane road cutting through the middle of town. Others want to ensure the final design retains Aledo’s small-town charm.

If you missed the meeting, you can still learn more and submit your thoughts. TxDOT is collecting public feedback and providing updates online.

Whether you’re a daily commuter, a business owner, or just someone who enjoys a peaceful walk through town, this project will likely affect you in some way. Now’s the time to get informed and speak up.
