In the early hours of Monday morning, just a few miles from Benbrook, a fire broke out at the Red Roof Inn off I-30 in White Settlement, catching nearly everyone off guard.
It was around 5:20 a.m. when flames started tearing through one of the buildings. But what could’ve been a devastating tragedy turned into a story of quick thinking, teamwork, and a whole lot of neighborly courage.
White Settlement police officers driving nearby spotted flames and acted fast. They didn’t wait. They started knocking on doors, rousing sleeping guests, and getting people out before things got worse. Their quick response helped evacuate nearly 100 people, many of whom had no idea what was unfolding just feet from their doors.
Fire crews from White Settlement, Lake Worth, Benbrook, and Lockheed Martin were on the scene in minutes. With three engines, two ladder trucks, and a rescue unit in the mix, they worked together to contain the blaze. The fire was under control within an hour, but not before it left serious damage to at least seven units.
Despite the destruction, no major injuries were reported, and many guests credit the officers and firefighters for saving their lives. One guest saw his wall light up orange, grabbed his dog, and ran. Another said the smoke woke her up, but it was the officers making rounds that ensured no one was left behind.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The White Settlement Fire Marshal is working alongside Tarrant County officials to figure out what sparked it all.
In a city often overshadowed by the larger Metroplex, this response reminded folks of the tight-knit feel that defines towns like Benbrook and White Settlement. When the heat turned up, neighbors had each other’s backs.
