What’s Taking So Long With Benbrook’s New City Hall Project?

If you’ve driven down Winscott Road lately, you’ve likely noticed Benbrook’s nearly finished City Hall — striking from the outside but still not quite open. Many residents have been asking the same question: what’s causing the delay?

According to City Council candidate Cameron Potter (Place 5), the answer lies in a mix of construction setbacks and supply challenges.

The project hit a major snag when the clock tower, initially scheduled for installation in August 2024, was damaged during delivery and failed to meet quality standards. That meant starting over with a new design, fresh engineering, and another round of manufacturing. Add in ongoing material shortages and subcontractor delays, and progress slowed to a crawl.

A few finishing touches are still underway, including a family-friendly splash pad and water feature, which has sparked mixed opinions among residents. Despite the delays, Potter confirmed that the project remains within its original 2021 voter-approved bond budget.

The conversation online has been lively, ranging from concerns about parking and aesthetics to optimism about a modern facility that could attract new business and civic engagement. Some say it’s long overdue, while others question the priorities behind its design.

Potter’s larger point, however, is about transparency. He says the holdup highlights the importance of clear communication between city leadership and residents. As he put it, keeping the public informed prevents speculation and builds trust — something Benbrook residents value deeply.

The new City Hall will also house the Benbrook Police Department and Senior Citizens Center, creating a shared civic hub once complete. Updates on the project’s progress can be found at benbrook-tx.gov.
