A recent scam at the CVS on Highway 377 involves clerks marking bills with a special “fake money” marker that leaves a brown streak. The clerk then claims your cash is counterfeit and tries to keep the bills.
One shopper who had just withdrawn money from their bank was shocked when the clerk insisted their $50 and $100 bills were fake. After a back-and-forth, the bills were returned, but a bank check confirmed the money was genuine. It turns out scammers are buying these fake markers online to target customers, marking perfectly good bills, and trying to keep the cash.
