Understanding MAP Testing in FWISD.

For families new to Benbrook and Fort Worth ISD in general, one of the first significant questions that arises each school year is about MAP testing. What is it, and why does it matter?

MAP Growth, created by NWEA, is a computer-adaptive test designed to measure what students know and how they are progressing academically. The test adjusts as your child answers questions: correct answers make the next question a little tougher, while incorrect answers make the next one a bit easier. This way, top-performing students are challenged without overwhelming those who are still developing their skills.

Instead of focusing solely on grade-level benchmarks, MAP testing utilizes a RIT scale, which provides a clear and accurate picture of a student’s knowledge, regardless of their grade level. Even more importantly, it tracks growth over time. Parents and teachers can observe a child’s development throughout the school year and across multiple years, helping to shape learning goals that are both realistic and encouraging.

Students in FWISD take MAP testing three times a year, and each time, families receive a score that can help them understand their child’s progress and identify areas where extra support may be needed.

For parents new to the district, MAP testing is one of the best tools schools have to ensure that learning is personalized, progress is tracked, and every child is allowed to grow at their own pace.
