New Scam Alert: Malware Masquerading as CAPTCHA.

A new online scam is making the rounds, and it is designed to look like the everyday “Verify You Are Human” CAPTCHA many of us are used to seeing.

Instead of protecting users, this fake test tricks people into entering a series of keystrokes that secretly install malware on their devices.

The scam typically appears on fraudulent websites or even compromised legitimate ones. Victims are prompted to perform commands such as Win + R, then paste and run malicious code. Once installed, the malware can steal usernames, passwords, and other sensitive information, potentially granting hackers full access to personal accounts.

Experts advise residents to stay alert:

  • Run regular antivirus and malware scans.
  • Avoid clicking on unexpected pop-ups or messages. Real verification tests will not ask you to type out commands.
  • Monitor your credit reports for suspicious activity.

If you suspect your information has been compromised, immediate steps should be taken to secure accounts and report possible identity theft. Helpful resources can be found through the Federal Trade Commission at identitytheft.gov.

This latest tactic is another reminder that staying vigilant online is just as important as locking your front door.
