More than 1,000 local students are heading back to class a little more prepared thanks to a community effort that brought school supplies, health services, haircuts and clothing together under one roof.
The Fort Worth Community Collaborative reported serving 1,062 K-12 students during its back-to-school event. The Benbrook Lions Club provided 150 eye exams, while JPS Health Network provided 100 UIL physicals. Volunteers helped distribute backpacks, and local stylists provided more than 100 haircuts.
Another 300 students received backpacks packed with grade-specific supplies outside the store, while families also had access to uniforms and discounted clothing.
The event took plenty of hands to pull off, but for organizers, the hugs and smiles made the work worthwhile.
