A judge has dismissed Tarrant County and six defendants from a civil suit filed over the death of inmate Anthony Johnson Jr. at the Tarrant County Jail.
Johnson died in April 2024 following a struggle with detention officers. Surveillance footage showed an officer using a knee restraint, and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide.
Two jailers, Rafael Moreno and Joel Garcia, were indicted on murder charges last summer. Johnson’s family sued the county and 15 others, alleging liability for his death.
However, U.S. District Court Judge Reed O’Connor ruled on February 7, dismissing Tarrant County and six individuals from the case, leaving nine defendants still named in the suit.
