In January 1986, Fort Worth celebrated the first federally recognized Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a historic march down East Rosedale Street, led by civil rights advocate Opal Lee.
Joined by 150 marchers carrying flags and posters of King, Lee helped commemorate the civil rights leader’s commitment to racial equality through peaceful demonstration.
The 27-block march, from Texas Wesleyan College to Community Christian Church, echoed the spirit of King’s own marches for justice.
Lee’s activism extended far beyond that day, culminating in her successful campaign to make Juneteenth a national holiday in 2021.
Fort Worth will continue this legacy with its 40th annual MLK parade on Monday, Jan. 20.
