Students from I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and Visual and Performing Arts stepped into the spotlight last Friday night, performing alongside the Hattie Mae Lesley Resident Artists of the Fort Worth Opera during a live production of Romeo and Juliet.
The performance capped off an immersive 30-hour residency at I.M. Terrell, where students worked side by side with professional opera artists. Together, they studied the original source material, learned the fundamentals of opera, and explored elements of technical design and stage production. The experience gave students a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how a full operatic performance comes together.
The collaboration is part of Fort Worth Opera’s Project Opera, an ongoing initiative that brings resident artists into schools across the district. Earlier this year, artists partnered with students at North Side High School, and the program will continue next with students from Benbrook Middle High School.
For many students, the night was more than a performance. It was a glimpse into what is possible when classroom learning meets real-world artistry.
