Fort Worth ISD is moving to take legal action against major social media companies, alleging their platforms contribute to a growing mental health crisis among students.
The district’s school board approved contracts with two Texas-based law firms on Feb. 18, positioning Fort Worth ISD to join over 200 school districts nationwide in the federal lawsuit.
The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco, targets Google (YouTube), Meta (Facebook and Instagram), ByteDance (TikTok), and Snap (Snapchat). School districts claim these platforms are intentionally designed to be addictive, exploiting adolescents’ underdeveloped impulse control and increasing anxiety.
