Benbrook, Texas—Finnish educators Jyrki and Sanni Kalliolahti, affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. K, have become beloved figures at BASIS Benbrook. They bring over 20 years of teaching experience and a global perspective to the charter school.
The couple moved to Texas on J-1 teaching visas, seeking a new challenge. Sanni teaches algebra, while Jyrki focuses on math and physics. They’ve introduced Finnish teaching practices, like using graph paper for math assignments, and have been impressed by the ambition of BASIS students, some of whom have mastered high school-level material.
Outside the classroom, the Kalliolahtis have embraced Texas life and the warm hospitality of their colleagues. With their visas nearing expiration, they hope to extend their stay and continue enriching their students’ education.
Their impact is clear: In 2024, 78% of BASIS sixth graders met grade-level standards in math. Beyond academics, they’ve shared insights about Finland’s education system, fostering a global perspective among their students.
